Booth Road Celtic Football Club was founded back in June 2001. The club was founded by Mark Maloney, John Finn, Colm Kernan and the late Graham White and Pearse Butler. The founders came together and had a meeting in Bewleys Hotel at Newlands Cross and it was decided to set up a senior team with a committee and the club was founded. The name Booth Road Celtic reverts back to the early 90's when John Maher from the Booth Road set up a street league team called "The Booth Bhoys". A majority of the team came from John Mahers daily coaching sessions & street league team and all the players involved came from the Booth Road & Sruleen area of Clondalkin. The club is located just off the Newlands Cross area of Clondalkin and our teams currently play out of the Clondalkin Community Centre and Corkagh Park. Our club crest was designed by Matty Doyle and the ball on the crest represents the hard work by John Maher and the well is the symbol of St Brigids Well on the Booth Road. Legend has it that St Brigid came to the site of the monastery at Cluain and baptised pagans at the well on Booth Road. The structure dates back from 1761 and the railings were donated by the Old Paper Mills. The well is believed to have curative powers. A piece of rag dipped in the water and used to wipe the face, particularly young girls, was said to cure eye complaints. The rag was then hanged on the adjoining tree. For history of the well please see www.clondalkinparish.com. The committee organised a fundraiser at the Workers Party Club with John Clifford providing the music entertainment on the night and much needed funds were raised to kickstart our project and Martin Finn from Rockbrook Crash Repairs sponsored our first set of Jerseys. The club colours are green and white with our away colours yellow and green. The team entered the AUL league Sunday division and won the league in our first season under the guidance of manager Barney McGrath. Over the following seasons the interest grew from the local area a second senior team and ladies team was set up. The club further grew when Derek McHugh and Dermot Flood set up the schoolboy section and the club grew from strength to strength and continues to do so to this very day. |
